The word Ṣatkarma is a combination of the words Ṣat (six) and karma (act). As a house stands firmly on its foundation, the same way, in the yogic journey our body needs a strong foundation which is maintained by thorough cleansing of our body.

Shat karma are a set of yogic purification techniques mentioned in  haṭhayogapradīpikā. These are procedures that remove gross impurities such as mucus and toxins from the body, curing a variety of diseases and render one fit for the practice of Prāṇāyāma. The Ṣatkarmas enable the purification of the nāḍis, which means that Śakti can flow throughout the body unobstructed.

Traditionally, there are 6 method yogis used for cleansing of internal organs for a healthy body is called as Shatkarma.

  1. Dhauti – Swallowing a long strip of cloth in order to cleanse the stomach
  2. Basti – a yogic purification, intended to clean the lower abdomen, especially the colon.
  3. Neti – nasal cleaning with thread or water
  4. Trāṭaka – staring until the eyes water
  5. Nauli – rotating the abdominal muscles to stimulate digestion
  6. Kapālabhāti – vigorous breathing
